Charlotte Douglas International Airport is the primary airport for both commercial and military use in the metropolitan Charlotte, North Carolina area.

The airport is owned by the City of Charlotte and it is operated by Charlotte Aviation Department, a department that falls under the City of Charlotte. The IATA code is CLT and the ICAO code is KCLT.

It was first established as Charlotte Municipal Airport in 1935 before it was renamed after Ben Elbert Douglas Sr, the mayor of Charlotte at the time the airport was first established, in 1954 and in 1982 it was given its current name.

It is the fortress hub for American Airlines that operates over 700 daily flights to 149 destinations out of the airport and carries more than half of the passengers that come through the airport. It was the sixth busiest airport in the world ranked by aircraft movements in 2019, as well as the 11th busiest in the USA ranked by passenger traffic with over 50,000,000 passengers coming through it. In 2020 the number of passengers that moved through the airport was 27,205,082, a decrease due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport is also the home to the Charlotte Air National Guard Base and its host unit, the 145th Airlift Wing as well as to an air cargo center and an American Airlines maintenance facility.

The airport has four runways as follows; 2 asphalt/concrete of 8,677 ft/2,645 m and 7,502 ft/2,287 m respectively and 2 concrete of 10,000 ft/3,048 and 9,000 ft/2,743 m respectively.

The airport has undergone several expansion and renovations over the many decades it has existed and there are more to come, including the construction of the CATS LYNX Silver Line light rail train service expected to be completed in 2030.

CLT has one single terminal with 5 concourses, A, B, C, D and E, with a total of 115 gates. The central terminal building houses ticketing, security and baggage claim and the concourses are all connected to this central building. Concourse A has 21 gates, Concourse B has 16 gates, Concourse C has18 gates, Concourse D has 13 gates and Concourse E has 46 gates. Concourse A is also divided into a main pier and an extension.

Rental Cars – The airport’s car rental facility houses the rental car companies at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. The facility is located on Levels 1-3 of the parking facility located opposite the terminal and the buildings are connected via walkways on Level 2, which is also the level where the rental car companies’ offices are located.

Public Transportation Buses – Charlotte Area Transit System, CATS, operates an Express bus called the Sprinter that runs between the airport and City Center Charlotte beginning in the early mornings to after midnight every day of the week.

Taxis – Taxi companies with a license are allowed to wait at the taxi rank located right outside the Baggage Claim area on the Arrivals Level. An attendant is in operation to assist travelers during the day. A trip to City Center Charlotte costs around $25, for up to two passengers, and will take approximately 15-20 minutes. Hotel Shuttles – Travelers can arrange transfer through their hotel, if the hotel offers the service, and they will get picked up at the hotel shuttle stop located outside the Baggage Claim area.

Limousines and Shuttles – Travelers can pre-arrange their private limousine or shuttle transfer through an independent company, and they will get picked up outside the Baggage Claim area.

Ride Shares – Travelers can arrange for transfer via a Ride Share app, and they will be picked up at the stop across from the CATS bus stop, located to the right outside the Baggage Claim area.

Trains – CLT doesn’t have a train station so travelers that wish to continue their journey via train must first go to the station they wish to travel from. The CATS light rail system, LYNX, serves the regional Charlotte while Amtrak connects Charlotte with cities like New York City and New Orleans. The airport has several different parking lots to offer their visitors, from hourly to long term up to 30 days (for longer stays please contact the airport). The shorter term parking options are located closer to the airport, with the closest being the Hourly Deck on levels 4-7 in the parking facility connected to the terminal through walkways on the second level.

The other parking options offer complimentary shuttle services at all times.

CLT offers free WiFi connection to all visitors through their network called “CLT Free WiFi” and it is as simple as connecting to it before opening up a browser. If it doesn’t connect right away the browser probably needs refreshing or reopening before it works.
